A Newspaper is (not) Good for Enhancing Our Knowledge?

“A Newspaper is Good for Enhancing Our Knowledge”

I disagree with that statement because I think newspaper is just for knowing new informations not for enhancing our knowledge. If we want to enhance our knowledge we should read a book because if we read a book we know who is a writer, where they took their ideas from. On the contrary, sometimes we don’t know who is a writer of newspaper and we also don’t know where they took their ideas from. So we don’t know the statement or the information is true or false. The reason is, in this era, everybody needs money and they look for it everyday in everywhere. Finally, sometimes they do anything and they don’t care wether it’s true or false, good or bad. It is just for making money. Also for a newspaper, sometimes they writer wrong information just for the interest of people attention. So people buy it and the newspaper’s writers get a lot of money. For example, the news about Princess Diana after she died. At the time everybody contests to write the reason of her death. They don’t care they write true or not true. Finally, Princess Diana’s Biography answers everything as such it clarifies any news about her. After that no body can write wrong issue about her.

According to that problem, we should censor any information from a newspaper before we absorb everything. We, as educated people are not possible to do it. But how about uneducated people? I’m sure they will absorb anything from anewspaper without accesing it.

In summary, a newspaper is just for news informations without it we know whether it is true or false. So, a newspaper is not good for enhancing our knowledge, but we can read it as long as we can filterize informations from tahat newspaper.

  1. I agree with your general line of thought on newspapers; however, the same problems are often present in books—and the same cautiousness should be applied when reading. Notably, there is no a priori reason to trust a biography on Princess Diana over a newspaper article on her. (The likes of The Sun excluded…)

    • yes, the same problems are often present in books. but i think books are more reliable because we can compare between one book with another book in case we need the data really accurate

nice to sharing with michael ^.^

Sorry, I don’t think so. Some newspapers with a good reputation such as Pos Kota could elevate our knowledge for new way of pocketpicking, ha ha ha… and Princess Diana, I love her so and that’s why I prefer to read the false issues rather than the true ones, Me Lady…

The debate seems to be among few of you.. speaking in a language alien to me :-) however I understand you are talking about knowledge and its available sources. AD, my master says something “Knowledge comes from books or any where for that matter.. but it is dead. Knowledge becomes alive only when there is wisdom in you. And wisdom come from Master.”

You too can enrich you debate if you consult AD on this. He writes on http://agyaatdarshan.wordpress.com

I am afraid I have to disagree with this one.

Newspaper, unlike a book, is written by a legit source and must be objective. That’s why when we read newspaper, we often saw a quote – something like “seperti yang sudah dikatakan oleh Bapak ini pada tanggal sekian sekian” – and that’s make it very strong argument.

In the other hand, a book, is a subjective point of view by a single or group of writer which research the source and at the end, they put a subjective value to it. That’s why we often see a controversy about particular topic in books. And that remind me of “Gurita Cikeas”, which show a very weak opinion. Why? because it was written with little facts.

about thw newspaper writer, I think you can see the author up above the articles. Just check it out. :)

However, I do have to agree with you that some newspaper is built on money purpose. “Lampu Merah” will be a good example for it :)

Last one, for me, there are no true or false in news. There’s only what we believe and what we don’t believe.

    Thanks for this good post

    • In an interesting twist, I have to repeat my first comment with books and papers in opposite places:

Few newspapers are objective, neutral, and scientific in their approach—and even if these exist (of which I am far from sure), there is always the human factor. On the contrary, most newspapers I have read have a. been politically partial, b. had many less-than-stellar minds on their list of authors.
